Overview of the Irish Residence Permit

The Irish Residence Permit (IRP) is an essential document for all non-EU/EEA international students staying in Ireland for more than 90 days. It serves as official proof of your legal residence status and immigration permission in Ireland. Understanding what the IRP is, how to obtain it, and how to maintain it is crucial for your successful stay as a student in Ireland.

What is the IRP?

The Irish Residence Permit (IRP) is a wallet-sized plastic card that confirms your immigration status in Ireland. It contains:

  • Your personal details, photo, and signature
  • Your permission stamp type (Stamp 2 for students)
  • Expiry date of your permission
  • A microchip with your biometric information

The IRP is not an identification card but serves as proof of your legal right to reside in Ireland. You should carry it with you at all times, especially when traveling in and out of Ireland.

Who Needs an IRP?

You need to register for an IRP if:

  • You are from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland
  • You are staying in Ireland for more than 90 days
  • You have been granted permission to study, work, or join family in Ireland

As an international student, you will typically be granted a Stamp 2 permission, which allows you to:

  • Study full-time at an approved educational institution
  • Work up to 20 hours per week during term time
  • Work full-time (40 hours per week) during official holiday periods

When to Register for Your IRP

According to the Irish Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), you must register your immigration permission within 90 days of arriving in Ireland. This timeframe is important to note, but if you cannot secure an appointment within this period, the authorities understand and will not expect you to leave the country while waiting to register.

Planning Ahead

The registration process can be busy, especially at the start of the academic year (September/October). It's advisable to book your appointment as early as possible after arrival to avoid delays. If your course starts in September, try to arrive in Ireland with enough time before classes begin to complete this process.

IRP vs. Visa: Understanding the Difference

Entry Visa

An entry visa (if required based on your nationality) only permits you to enter Ireland. It does not grant permission to stay long-term. Many non-EU/EEA students need this to enter Ireland initially.

Irish Residence Permit (IRP)

The IRP is issued after you arrive in Ireland and register your immigration permission. It confirms your legal right to stay in Ireland for the specified period and purpose (studying).

Even if you entered Ireland visa-free (depending on your nationality), you still need to register for an IRP if staying longer than 90 days.

Application Process

The process for obtaining your Irish Residence Permit involves several clear steps. Understanding this process helps ensure a smooth registration experience. Below is a comprehensive guide to applying for your IRP after arriving in Ireland.

01

Book an Appointment

Since January 13, 2025, all first-time IRP registrations for students residing anywhere in Ireland must be done at the Registration Office in Burgh Quay, Dublin. To book an appointment:

  • Create an account on the Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) Digital Contact Centre portal.
  • Log in and select the option to book a first-time registration appointment.
  • Choose an available date and time for your appointment. New slots are typically released regularly, but especially at the start of the academic year (September/October), appointment availability can be limited.
02

Prepare Required Documents

After booking your appointment, you'll receive an email confirmation that includes details of the documents you need to bring. Gather all necessary documentation before your appointment:

Essential Documents:

  • • Valid passport (original)
  • • University acceptance/enrollment letter
  • • Proof of address in Ireland (utility bill, lease agreement)
  • • Proof of financial resources

Student-Specific Documents:

  • • Evidence of enrollment in a full-time course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP)
  • • Proof of tuition fee payment
  • • Private medical insurance documentation

Note: Electronic copies are not accepted. You must bring printed copies of all supporting documentation relevant to your permission type.

Make sure to complete the address form that comes with your appointment confirmation email. This is where your IRP card will be sent after processing.

03

Attend Your Appointment

On the day of your appointment, go to the Registration Office at Burgh Quay, Dublin 2. What to expect during your appointment:

Document Review

Immigration officers will review all your documents to ensure they meet requirements. Be prepared to answer questions about your purpose of stay.

Biometric Capture

Your photograph and fingerprints will be taken for inclusion on your IRP card. Your signature will also be captured digitally.

Fee Payment

The standard registration fee is €300, payable by credit or debit card only. Cash is not accepted. Some categories may be exempt from this fee.

04

Receive Your IRP Card

After successfully completing your appointment:

  • Your passport will be stamped with your permission to stay in Ireland.
  • Your details will be processed by the Immigration Service, and your IRP card will be produced.
  • Your IRP card will be sent by post to the address you provided on your application form, usually within 10-15 working days of your appointment.

While Waiting for Your Card

The passport stamp you receive at your appointment serves as temporary proof of your immigration permission until your IRP card arrives.
