Estonia Student Visa Process
Your step-by-step guide to the Estonia student visa application: procedures, timelines, fees, and interview preparation.
Complete Guide to Estonia Student Visa Process
Students from India and Pakistan need a visa to study in Estonia. Most degree students use two steps: a visa to enter, then a residence permit to stay. This guide is for students who start in 2026-27.
First you get a long-stay visa (D-visa) at an Estonian embassy. If your studies last more than a year, you then apply for a temporary residence permit (TRP) for study at the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) after you arrive. Amounts are in euros (EUR).
Understanding the Estonia Student Visa
Know the visa types, eligibility criteria, and application timeline
Long-stay visa (D-visa)
The visa you get before you travel. Degree students staying more than a year use it to enter and then apply for a residence permit.
• Can last up to 365 days in 12 months.
• Visit other Schengen countries (European countries without border checks) for up to 90 days in any 180 days.
• If your degree is one year or less, the D-visa is enough.
Temporary residence permit (TRP) for study
The permit to live in Estonia as a student. You get a residence permit card with it.
• For full-time degree students whose studies last more than a year.
• It lasts as long as your studies, up to 5 years.
• You may work without a separate permit if the work does not interfere with your studies.
Important
To qualify for a Estonia student visa, you must meet these requirements:
Admission
An admission letter for full-time study at an Estonian school.
Money
For the D-visa: at least EUR 880 a month of legal income in 2026.
Health insurance
Travel medical insurance for the D-visa. Health insurance for the residence permit.
Valid passport
Made in the last 10 years. It must still work 3 months after the visa ends.
The timing of your visa application is crucial for a smooth process.
New Students
Apply once you have your admission letter. You can apply up to six months before you arrive.
Continuing Students
If you already have a residence permit, apply to extend it at the PPA before it ends.
