Italy Student Visa Process
Your step-by-step guide to the Italy student visa application: procedures, timelines, fees, and interview preparation.
Complete Guide to Italy Student Visa Process
Students from India and Pakistan need a national study visa (type D) to study a full degree in Italy. The steps start with your university and the Universitaly portal, not with the visa office.
First you pre-enrol on the Universitaly portal. When your university validates it, you book a visa appointment, hand in your papers and give fingerprints.

National Study Visa (Type D)
The visa for students starting a degree at an Italian university.
• Valid for 365 days, and you can enter Italy many times.
• Fee: EUR 50.
100-Day Study Visa (Type D)
A study visa valid for 100 days, for students who must sit a test in Italy before they can enrol.
• For students whose university approved their pre-enrolment with a condition ("with reserve"), because they must sit a test in Italy or only have an official temporary (provisional) certificate.
• New Delhi embassy: if the entrance test is before your final study certificate is issued, apply for the short-stay study visa (Type C).
Important
To qualify for a Italy student visa, you must meet these requirements:

Show at least EUR 10,179.85 for one year of living costs.
Insurance
At least EUR 30,000 cover for emergency hospital care.

Apply as soon as your university validates your pre-enrolment. In India, apply 15 to 180 working days before you leave. Pakistan: follow the Islamabad checklist.
Continuing Students
Students already in Italy do not need a new visa. They renew their residence permit at least 60 days before it ends.
