Your permit card lets you live and study in Hungary. Hungary's immigration office gives you the card. Its name is the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP).
Keeping Your Permit Valid
Your permit stays valid only while you keep the rules. Your university reports your student status to NDGAP.

Who Checks Your Status
NDGAP decides on permits. Your university reports changes in your student status to NDGAP.

Address certificate
A paper that shows your home address in Hungary is registered. Keep it with you.
Student status certificate
From your university. Needed for extensions and the TAJ card (your Hungarian health insurance card).
If You Break the Rules
Rules for Students (2026-27)
Active student status
Stay an active full-time student. A passive semester (a semester when you stay enrolled but do not study) can make your permit invalid.
Finish on time
Finish your course within 1.5 times its normal length, or NDGAP may refuse to extend your permit. A 2-year course must end in 3 years or less.
Report a new address
Report a move on Enter Hungary within 3 days.
Report a job
Tell NDGAP within 5 days if you start working for a new company.
Changing university
Apply for an extension on Enter Hungary with your new admission letter. If you only move to a new department in the same university, you do not need to do anything.
Keep your passport valid
Your permit cannot last longer than your passport.

Most students from India and Pakistan hold the residence permit for studies. After graduation, some move to a job-seeking permit.

Permit Types
Residence Permit for Studies
For full-time study at a state-recognised Hungarian university or its preparatory course.
Key Requirements:
- Admission letter and proof of tuition payment.
- Proof that you know the language of your course.
- Money for living, rent and the trip home.
- Insurance that pays for your medical treatment, or enough money to pay for it yourself.
- A real Hungarian address on the form.
Extending the Permit
For students who continue their studies. You must have lived in Hungary with the permit at least 90 days in any 180 days.
Key Requirements:
- A valid permit on the day you apply.
- Active student status certificate.
- Statement of your study progress from the university.
- Bank statement, health insurance and address certificate.
- A new ID photo, not older than 3 months.
Job-Seeking or Business Permit
Lets graduates look for work or start a business in Hungary for up to 9 months. It cannot be extended.
Key Requirements:
- A valid residence permit for studies.
- Proof you finished your studies.
- The job or business must suit your level of study (bachelor's or master's).

Apply at the embassy
Hand in your permit application at the embassy and pay EUR 110 (euros).
Duration: Before travel
NDGAP decides
If approved, you get a type D visa (the entry visa you use to travel to Hungary and collect your permit card).
Duration: Up to 60 days
Go to Hungary
The type D visa (a visa sticker in your passport) lets you stay up to 30 days. Use this time to collect your card.
Duration: Within 3 months of approval
Collect your card
The card is posted to your university.
Duration: After arrival
Extend before it ends
Apply on Enter Hungary while the card is still valid.

Get admitted and pay tuition
Your university sends the admission letter.
You need both before you apply.
Prepare documents
Originals plus one full set of copies.
Use the embassy checklist for your country.
Apply in person
Give fingerprints and pay EUR 110.
Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai, or Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad.
Wait for NDGAP
The embassy tells you the result.

Travel and collect your card
The card is posted to your university.

Extending Your Permit (on Enter Hungary)
Check the dates
Apply between 90 and 30 days before your card ends.
Get your papers
Student status certificate, progress statement, bank statement, insurance, address certificate and a new photo.
Apply and pay online
Fill in the form on Enter Hungary and pay HUF 26,000 by card.
Give fingerprints
Visit your regional NDGAP office within 15 days. If you miss it, the application is cancelled.

Passport

Admission letter

Proof of tuition payment

Proof of language skill
A test certificate, or a diploma from a course taught in that language.
Proof of money
Bank statements, a signed letter from your family saying they will pay for you, or a scholarship letter.
Health insurance
Insurance that pays for all your medical treatment, or enough money to pay for it yourself.
One photo
A photo of your face.
Extending the Permit
ID photo
A photo saved as a .jpeg file (not .png), smaller than 3 megabytes (MB), taken in the last 3 months.
Passport copy
The page with your details.
Active student status certificate
From your university.
Study progress statement
Shows how many semesters your course has and how many you have done.
Bank statement, insurance and address certificate
Upload them on Enter Hungary.
After You Graduate
Job-seeking permit
- Valid residence permit for studies.
- Proof you finished your studies.
- Apply at least 15 days before your permit ends.
How Long It Takes
NDGAP must decide on a permit within 60 days.
