Documents for Irish University Applications

The papers Irish universities ask for when you apply. After you get an offer, the study visa (your permission to enter Ireland to study) needs more papers. Each course sets its own list, so check your course page.

Document types

What each group of papers is for.

Academic papers

Transcripts and degree certificates.

Personal papers

Personal statement and references.

English

A test result where your course needs one.

Money papers

Fee receipt and bank statements for the visa.

Academic documents

Proof of what you studied and your results.

Transcripts
  • Mark sheets for every year of your degree
  • Upload them on the application
Degree certificate
  • Or a provisional certificate if you are still studying
Personal and supporting documents

Papers that show who you are and why you fit the course.

Personal statement
  • Many courses ask for one
  • Explain your reasons for the course
Academic references
  • Some students from outside the European Union (EU) must ask their referees to email letters straight to UCD
Research proposal
  • For research degrees, contact one or two possible supervisors first
Tips for Standout Supporting Documents

Essays

  • Say why you chose this course and how it follows your studies or work.

Recommendations

  • Ask teachers or bosses who know your work.
Money and other papers

Money papers matter more at the visa stage than at the university stage.

Application fee
  • UCD charges 60 euros (EUR 60), paid by card, for most online applications
Proof of fee payment
  • Needed for the visa
  • If the course fee is less than EUR 6,000, pay all of it. If it is more, pay at least EUR 6,000.
Bank statements
  • 6 months of history
  • At least EUR 10,000 that you can use right away, for your first year (visa rule)

Checks on your papers

Universities and the visa office check papers in different ways.

University stage
  • Copies are usually enough
  • Your offer is final only after the university checks your papers
Visa stage
  • Original papers unless a copy is allowed
  • Letters on the office's own letter paper, signed by hand
  • Translations for papers not in English or Irish

Document Verification Timeline

Upload your papers

When you apply

A list of required papers comes by email after you submit.

Pay your fee

After your offer

The visa needs proof of fee payment.

Apply for your visa

From 3 months before travel

Send original papers to the visa office.

Common Document Authentication Pitfalls

•Putting all your papers in one upload box

•Sending papers on a USB stick or Dropbox link to the visa office

•An English certificate older than 2 years at your course start

Document checklist

Two stages: what the university asks for, then what the visa asks for.

For the university application

Transcripts (mark sheets) from your degree
Personal statement (a short letter about you)
Academic references (notes from teachers who know your work)
English test result, if your course asks for it
Passport copy

For the study visa, after your offer

Acceptance letter
Proof of fee payment
Bank statements for 6 months
English test certificate issued within 2 years of your course start
Private medical insurance (your own policy, or your college's group plan)

Keep your papers tidy

Upload each paper in its own box on the application form. Putting everything in one box can leave your application incomplete.
