Application Process

Step-by-Step Application Process

International students apply directly to each university online. Here are the steps, using the University of Auckland (UoA) and Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) as examples.

1
Choose your course

Each course page shows what you study and the entry requirements.

Key Considerations

  • Entry requirements
  • Closing date
  • Fees

Pro Tip

At VUW, switch the course page to your nationality to see your rules.

2
Check entry requirements

You must meet English and academic requirements.

Key Considerations

  • English: UoA postgraduate (a master's or PhD) needs IELTS 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each part
  • A degree that counts the same as a New Zealand bachelor's degree, for postgraduate study

Pro Tip

VUW does not ask for GMAT or GRE scores (extra entry exams some universities use).

3
Prepare your documents

Certified copies (copies an approved person has stamped as true) of your documents, and certified translations of any not in English.

Key Considerations

  • Passport pages
  • All university transcripts
  • English test result

Pro Tip

Identity documents at UoA must be certified before you upload them.

4
Apply online

UoA: 'Apply now' site, up to six programmes. VUW: Pūaha, its online student website.

Key Considerations

  • Enter all your past study
  • Read the declaration or terms before you submit

Pro Tip

You need a personal email address to start.

5
Track and respond

Watch your email and portal for requests.

Pro Tip

Some courses take longer because of interviews or portfolios.

6
Accept and prepare

Accept your offer, enrol, pay fees and apply for your student visa.

Pro Tip

Apply for the visa at least 3 months before you travel.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues & Solutions

Some problems come up often. Here is how to avoid them.

Document problems
Documents the university cannot accept.

Uncertified copies

UoA and VUW ask for certified copies (a copy an approved person has stamped as true).

Solution:

Take your copy and the original to an approved person, such as a notary public (a person who signs to say the copy is true).

No translation

Documents not in English need a translation.

Solution:

Send the original and a certified English translation.

Waiting for results
You are waiting for your final marks.

Final results not ready

You can still apply at UoA.

Solution:

UoA starts checking your application. Upload your final transcript when you get it.

Late applications
Applying after the closing date.

Missed the closing date

The university may say no to a late application.

Solution:

UoA may look at it if it still has places. VUW looks at each late application on its own.
