Starting at a Saudi University

After you land, you go to orientation, do a health check for your Iqama (the Saudi residence card), collect your Iqama and register for courses. Here is what to expect.

Your First Steps

Do these in your first weeks.

  • Go to orientation: Meet your international office and learn the rules.
  • Iqama medical check: Your university arranges it.
  • Collect your Iqama: At KAUST, about 7 to 10 days after arrival.
  • Register for courses: Take 12 or more credit hours at Alfaisal.

Papers to Bring

Your university checks these after you arrive.

Identity and visa:

  • Passport with your student visa - Valid while you study.
  • Admission letter - From your university.

Studies:

  • Degree papers with an official stamp - Your university tells you which stamp it wants: an apostille or an attestation (both are official stamps that prove a paper is real).
  • Final transcript (full list of marks) - KAUST wants it sent straight from your old university.

Orientation

Universities run orientation at the start of the semester. At KAUST, the Iqama medical check (a health test for your residence card) happens in orientation week.

Course Registration

Courses are counted in credit hours.

Credit Hours

Fees are often charged per credit hour.

  • Minimum at PSU: You pay for at least 12 credit hours a semester.
  • Full load at Alfaisal: 12 or more credit hours a semester.
