Your residence permit for study (B permit) lets you live in Switzerland while you study.

Your visa and your permit

The visa lets you enter Switzerland. The permit lets you stay. You must keep your permit valid for your whole course.

Visa or permit?

Type D visa
  • Put in your passport by the Swiss embassy at home.

  • Used to enter Switzerland.

  • Usually valid for entry within 3 months of issue.

B permit
  • Issued by your canton after you arrive.

  • Lets you live and study in Switzerland.

  • Renewed each year while you study.

Who handles your permit

Your town registers you. The migration office of your canton issues and renews your permit. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) sets the national rules.

Papers you will use

What you must keep doing

Stay enrolled

Your permit is for study at the school named in your file. Renew it with your new enrolment paper each year.

Report changes

Work only with a permit

Your employer applies first. You start only after the canton says yes.

Leave properly

When you finish, tell your town office in person that you are leaving, before you leave Switzerland.

Typical Cases

Longer if papers are missing, your course changes, or you move to another canton.

Complex Cases

Apply to the new canton before you move.

Long trips abroad

Check before long trips.

Geneva: more than 6 months abroad ends a B permit.

Common mistakes

Coming on a tourist visa and hoping to switch.
Showing money in a parent's account in Zurich or Basel.
Starting a job before the canton says yes.
Forgetting to tell the town about a new address.

Plan ahead

Most problems come from late renewals and missing money proof.

Note your permit's end date and start the renewal early.
Keep your money proof ready for each renewal.
Ask your university before you change course.
