Main Entry Rules

Each university sets its own rules. These are the common ones.

Bachelor's

A recognised high school leaving certificate. At the University of Nicosia (UNIC), students with less than 7.5 out of 10 (CGPA) get extra help in year one. Ask UNIC how it counts other mark systems.

Master's

A bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Some programmes ask for more.

English

UNIC asks for IELTS 6 for a bachelor's and 6.5 for a master's. European University Cyprus (EUC) asks for IELTS 6.5 for a master's.

English level for your entry permit

The entry permit (also called the blue slip) lets you enter Cyprus to study. For it, the government asks for B1 to B2 for a bachelor's and B2 to C1 for a master's on the CEFR scale (B1 and B2 are middle levels, C1 is high).

Greek for public bachelor's

Most bachelor's courses at the University of Cyprus (UCY) need good Greek.

What each level asks for

1Bachelor's

High school leaving certificate and mark sheet in English.
English test, such as IELTS 6 at UNIC.

2Master's

Bachelor's degree and transcripts.
English test, such as IELTS 6.5.
At UCY: CV, a 1 to 2 page letter of interest and two references.

3PhD

A master's degree, in most cases.
Check the page of the university department you want to join.

Students from India and Pakistan need a recognised English test for most programmes.

Possible Exemptions

You may be exempt from English proficiency requirements in certain cases:

At UNIC, a master's applicant whose first degree was taught in English meets the university's English rule. The entry permit may still ask for an English test.

Extra Rules for Some Programmes

Different academic disciplines often have specific requirements beyond the general eligibility criteria. These specialized requirements ensure you have the necessary background and aptitude for success in your chosen field in Cyprus.

Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine

At EUC, a personal statement and a recommendation letter.
At EUC, the application fee is €80.
Separate admission rules at UNIC Medical School.

Extra Rules for Non-EU Students

International students face several additional requirements beyond those for domestic applicants. These ensure that you can successfully transition to studying in Cyprus and comply with immigration regulations.

Recognised English test

A test that the university sets only to place you in a class is not enough for your entry permit.

A recognised English test is compulsory at EUC for non-EU students (from outside the European Union, like India and Pakistan) who need an entry permit.
UNIC asks non-EU students to meet the English rules set by the Cyprus government (the education and interior ministries).
