Main Rules

The main rules for international students in 2026-27.

Not Egyptian

The international route is for students who are not Egyptian citizens.

A recognised school certificate

Your school certificate must count the same as Egypt's school-leaving certificate. It must also let you join a university in your own country.

The right subjects

Each course needs certain school subjects. Study in Egypt (the government's website for international students) shows them for your certificate and country.

Apply on Study in Egypt

International students are nominated (offered a place) to public universities only through Study in Egypt.

Certificate age

How old your certificate is does not stop you from applying on Study in Egypt.

Study in Egypt applies different rules to Indian, Pakistani and other certificates. Check yours on the platform.

Rules by Level

Bachelor's and postgraduate applicants send different papers.

What each level needs

1Bachelor's

A school certificate that Egypt treats as equal to its own.
The subjects your course needs.

2Master's and PhD

Your degree certificate and transcript.
Equivalency (official matching of your foreign degree) from Egypt's Supreme Council of Universities, or its online request report.
For a PhD: your master's or diploma certificate.
For medical subjects: an attested internship completion certificate.

Undergraduate Tests

1MDCAT (Pakistan, medicine)

Needed by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) for Pakistani students who studied in Pakistan.

At least 50%

2SAT (students with an American high school diploma)

Study in Egypt has special rules for students with an American high school diploma.

Rules differ by faculty

English Tests at AUC

English Proficiency Requirements

At The American University in Cairo (AUC), all new bachelor's students must send TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results taken within the last two years.

Score Validity

Check the test provider’s score validity rules and your university’s requirements.

Possible Exemptions

You may be exempt from English proficiency requirements in certain cases:

No test needed at AUC if you studied your last four school years in an English-speaking country, in English.
At AUC, a school that taught in English is not enough to skip the test.

Extra Rules for Medicine

Different academic disciplines often have specific requirements beyond the general eligibility criteria. These specialized requirements ensure you have the necessary background and aptitude for success in your chosen field in Egypt.

Medicine (students from India)

India's National Medical Commission (NMC) needs at least 54 months of study abroad.
Teaching must be in English.
A 12-month internship at the same foreign university.
Then a 12-month supervised internship in India, and NMC's exit exam (the National Exit Test, NExT).

Medicine (students from Pakistan)

F.Sc. (Pre-Medical), a school certificate, with at least 60%. Or an accepted entry test (SAT-II, MCAT or UCAT) from the PM&DC list.
At least 50% in MDCAT (the medical college entry test in Pakistan), if you studied in Pakistan.
Get the free PM&DC Student Registration Certificate before you go.
PM&DC needs at least 6,200 hours of study over five years, with at least 80% attendance.

Rules for Indian and Pakistani Certificates

International students face several additional requirements beyond those for domestic applicants. These ensure that you can successfully transition to studying in Egypt and comply with immigration regulations.

India

Egypt treats your Indian secondary certificate (science or arts) like the British school certificate.

Counts as equal to the Egyptian secondary certificate if you have the subjects your course needs.

Pakistan

Check the name on your certificate: Intermediate Higher School Certificate (HSSC).

Give your secondary school (SSC) and higher secondary school (HSSC) results.
On the form, list 5 subjects from your senior certificate and 3 from your secondary certificate.

Attestation

Get your certificate attested (officially stamped as real).

Option 1: first your country's foreign ministry stamps it, then the Egyptian embassy in your country.
Option 2: first your country's embassy in Egypt stamps it, then Egypt's foreign ministry.
