Post-Arrival Guide

Your First Weeks in Romania

A simple plan for your first day, first three days and first week in Romania. It helps you apply for your residence permit, the card that lets you live in Romania as a student, in time.

Romania Arrival Timeline
  • Check in to your home: Go to your dorm or flat and check the room.
  • Tell your family you arrived: Use airport or dorm wifi.
  • Keep your papers safe: Passport, visa and Letter of Acceptance to Studies (LoA), the letter you used for the visa, in one folder.
  • Save 112: The one emergency number in Romania.

Priority
First 24 Hours: The Basics

Your first day is for getting home safely and keeping your papers safe.

Essential Tasks

  • Check in to your home: Check your room and take photos of anything broken.
  • Contact your family: Tell them you arrived safely.
  • Keep your papers safe: Store your passport and visa in a safe place.
  • Save the emergency number: Save 112 before you need it.

Quick Tips

Emergency contacts to save

  • Police, ambulance and firefighters: 112 (free, from any phone, with help in English and French)

First Day Tips

  • Keep your passport, visa and Letter of Acceptance together.
  • Note the date you entered Romania. Your 30 days for the permit start then.
  • Save 112 in your phone.
  • Carry some cash in Romanian lei (RON), Romania's money, for your first purchases.

First 3 Days: Get Oriented

Use your first days to find your way and collect your university papers.

Campus & Administration

  • International office: Collect your student certificate (a paper from your university that says you study there) and a copy of your Letter of Acceptance.
  • Housing papers: Dorm: get your dorm contract. Flat: check with the tax office (ANAF) that your rent contract is registered.
  • Ask about IGI: Ask how your university helps you book the IGI appointment.

Local Orientation

  • Walk your area: Find shops, a pharmacy and the bus stop near your home.
  • Get a SIM card: Buy a prepaid SIM card at a phone shop.
  • Learn the transport: Find the route to your faculty.

First Week: Papers and Setup

In your first week, finish signing up at your university, open a bank account and book your residence permit appointment.

Official Registration

  • Finish signing up at your university: Get your student certificate from the international office.
  • Open a bank account: Take your passport and proof that you are a student.
  • Start your residence permit: Apply at IGI within the first 30 days after you enter. You need a Romanian bank statement, a medical certificate (a paper from a doctor that says you are healthy) from a clinic in Romania, and your housing papers.

Social & Practical

  • Welcome events: Join your university's events for new international students.
  • Student transport pass: Ask your university how to get your student pass for local transport.
  • Register with a family doctor: Students must sign up with a family doctor, a doctor for everyday health problems, for basic care.

Safety and Emergencies

Romania has one emergency number for everything: 112.
