Insurance Rules for Sweden

The rule depends on how long you study.

Why You Need Health Insurance

  • Health care before you have your personal identity number is not covered by the public system.
  • Fee-paying students get FAS+ through Uppsala University and Chalmers.

Legal Requirements

  • Insurance for study under one year must cover emergency and other medical care, hospital stays and emergency dental care.
  • It must also cover travel home for medical reasons, and last your whole stay.

Insurance Approaches for Different Students

Study of one year or more

Register in the Swedish Population Register (the list of everyone who lives in Sweden). This gives you health and dental care.

Study of less than one year

You need full health insurance for your whole stay, unless your university insures you.

If your study lasts less than one year, you must have, or have applied for, full health insurance before you apply for your permit.

What Your University Gives

Check your university's insurance page before you buy extra insurance.

Your Insurance Options

Fee-paying students at some universities, such as Uppsala University and Chalmers, are insured by the university. Ask your university.

University insurance (FAS+)

Fee-paying students at Uppsala University and Chalmers get FAS+, the state insurance for fee-paying students. It comes through the university from Kammarkollegiet, a Swedish state agency.

Swedish public health care

If your permit is for 12 months or more, you get a personal identity number (personnummer), your Swedish ID number. With it you get the same health care as Swedish citizens.

Your own travel insurance

Covers your trip to Sweden and the time before you have your personal identity number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need insurance for my residence permit?

Only if you study for less than one year. Then you need health insurance that covers your whole stay, unless your university insures you.

When does university insurance start?

At Uppsala University, from two weeks before you register to two weeks after the semester ends.

How do I claim for a hospital bill?

Pay the bill yourself. Send the receipt and a claim form (the form to ask for your money back) to the insurer. Or ask the hospital for an invoice and send that. The hospital cannot bill Kammarkollegiet directly.

Does a scholarship include insurance?

No. The Swedish Institute (SI) scholarship does not include insurance.
