Enrolling at a UK University
Enrolment is when the university signs you up as a student. First, it checks that you are allowed to study in the UK. Money on this page is in British pounds (£, GBP).
How Enrolment Works
An example from Coventry and Leeds. Your university's steps may differ.
- Pay what your university asks: Coventry asks for at least £8,000 of your tuition fee before your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the reference number for your visa) and enrolment.
- Get your CAS and visa: Use your CAS to apply for the Student visa.
- Set up your eVisa: Create your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, check your eVisa and link your passport before you travel.
- Do the identity or Right to Study check: Leeds uses an online identity check. Coventry runs a Right to Study check with your passport and share code.
- Enrol online: At Coventry, you get an email link to enrol once payment and checks are done.
Example dates: Coventry, November 2026 start
Teaching starts on 2 November 2026. Enrolment opened on 12 October 2026 and closes on 16 November 2026.
Pass the check
At Coventry, if you do not pass the Right to Study check, you cannot finish enrolling.
Papers for Your Right to Study Check
The papers Coventry asks for if you have a Student visa and an eVisa.
Coventry Right to Study check:
- Valid passport - The one linked to your eVisa.
- eVisa share code - From your UKVI account.
- Proof of your trip to the UK - For example your flight booking or boarding pass.
- CAS letter - Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), the reference number your university gives you for the visa.
- Academic and English papers - Page 2 of your CAS lists them.
- ATAS certificate (a UK security check some subjects need) - Only if your course needs one.
Document Preparation Tips
- Bring your academic papers (your study results) and your English papers. Page 2 of your CAS lists them.
Check your own university
Each university sets its own steps and dates. Follow its emails.
Go to your classes
Your university must tell UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) if you do not arrive, or if you stop going to classes and doing your studies.
Your Student Card
Student card
At Coventry you collect it on campus. For Leeds, see the answer to "When do I get my student card?"
