Key Entry Rules

The main rules, in short.

Bachelor's at the University of Malta (UM)

With Indian Class 12 or Pakistani Intermediate (Higher Secondary Certificate, HSSC), UM first offers you a foundation course (a one-year course before a bachelor's).

Master's at UM

Most courses ask for a bachelor's degree at a set class or GPA (grade average). UM looks at each application one by one.

English

UM asks students who studied outside Malta for a SELT, an approved English test (Secure English Language Test).

Level for the permit

The residence permit is for full-time courses at MQF level 5 or higher (MQF is Malta's scale of study levels), at a university or college licensed by Malta's higher-education licensing body (MFHEA).

Rules by Level

Rules change by course. Always read your course page.

What each level asks for

1Bachelor's
  • Indian Class 12 or Pakistani Intermediate (HSSC): a foundation course first at UM.
  • American University of Malta (AUM): its own entry rules on each course page.
2Master's
  • Example, UM Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence: a bachelor's at MQF level 6 with at least Second Class (Honours) in ICT, engineering or a close area.
  • Example, UM Master of Arts in Humanities and Medical Sciences: a related bachelor's with Second Class or better, or an average of at least 55% in that area.
3Older Applicants
  • If you are 23 or older when your first semester (about half a year of study) starts, UM may consider you under a special rule for older applicants, often after an interview.

English Rules

English Proficiency Requirements

Important Considerations

Score Validity

Check the test provider’s score validity rules and your university’s requirements.

Possible Exemptions

You may be exempt from English proficiency requirements in certain cases:

  • UM: nationals of English-speaking countries who finished school there, or who hold a full degree from a recognised university, may not need a test.
Rules for Some Courses

Different academic disciplines often have specific requirements beyond the general eligibility criteria. These specialized requirements ensure you have the necessary background and aptitude for success in your chosen field in Malta.

Medicine at UM
  • UM Doctor of Medicine and Surgery: applicants with certificates from outside Malta apply by 15 January 2027 at 14:00.
For International Students

International students face several additional requirements beyond those for domestic applicants. These ensure that you can successfully transition to studying in Malta and comply with immigration regulations.

Your Papers

UM checks your original papers before you enrol.

  • Copies stamped and signed as true copies (certified copies) of certificates and transcripts.
  • Certified English translations if needed.
  • Originals checked when you arrive.
